It links and gives connection and bond between the North and South American countries. It consists of several islands which are subdivided into smaller islets with some of these islets having no names. Panama has one thousand islands on its Pacific side and six hundred islands on its Caribbean side. Among these six hundred islands along its Caribbean coastline, about two-thirds of these are located east of its capital and most are at the end of the isthmus. Panama’s islands have always been a frequent and favorite location for the popular American reality show, “Survivor” and are not surprising why many showed their interest on the island.

The islands of Panama are among the most beautiful islands in the whole world and most of these islands caused its creation and formation because of the volcanic activities. Here are some of the famous and most visited islands in Panama that are worth visiting and never be missed:

The San Blas Island

The San Blas Island placed and positioned at the northeast of the mainland, is one the most popular island in the country. In San Blas, there are more than 200 islets here but only half of them or 113 have names and the other 100 islets are nameless. Almost 30 islands are entirely of corals. In San Blas, you can enjoy diving, snorkeling, and fishing in this island.

The Colon Island

The Colon Island is placed in the northern-most and in the Bocas del Toro region and is one of the most beautiful and one of the largest archipelago of the islands. It is the country’s biggest tourist attraction and near the Caribbean Sea and the perfect island for nature lovers. In this island, the most famous are beachfront hotels, restaurants and discotheques and the residential districts. When you are here, you can visit other nearby islands through private boats or through renting a water taxi.

The Boca Brava Island

The Island of Boca Brava is located at the Gulf of Chirique in the Pacific coast of Panama. This is a virtually uninhabited island where the marine national park is also located. The Boca Brava is a small island yet there is something for everyone here, may it be for relaxing or participating in activities like diving and snorkeling or riding and surfing. In addition, the island is a good spot for birders and those who enjoy wildlife watching since it homes to hundreds of monkeys and turtles and raccoons. Located here are Linarte, Las Ventanas and Saino which are among the uninhabited islands and has crystal clear waters.

The Pearl Island

The Pearl Island also known as the Archipelago de las Perlas is located 50 miles from the capital of Panama, the Panama City. It has a group of 100 or more islands and many of them are small and uninhabited. Its largest islands are the San Jose and the Isla del Rey. This island has always been featured by the reality TV show, Survivor. Other TV shows that feature this island includes the Israeli version of and the BBC TV series, The Real Swiss Family Robinson.

Ghery. The Pitts enjoyed lunch and studied the scale model for over an hour, appreciating the different views the building will soon have. Brad and Angelina also explored the Casco Viejo, wandering among the spectacular colonial buildings, and then set off to spend the night in the Anton Valley, located in the country?s interior about a two hour drive from Panama City. The national press speculated that Pitt and Jolie considered investing in Panama real estate while touring the country.

In March, Mel Gibson visited Panama, presumably to scout locations for production of his next film. During his five days in Panama, he explored various hotel properties, including Gamboa, Villa Camilla in Azueros, Bocas del Toro, Darien and Playa Bonita, each beach locations or in close proximity to the ocean. It has been rumored that Mel Gibson had a meeting with a real estate agent in Panama, though we cannot say for sure what transpired.

Miguel Bose, the Panamanian born Spanish singer, recently visited and bought a condominium in a luxurious building located in the interior of Panama. The condominium is on the beach and possesses a spectacular ocean view. However, we are not sure if he bought the condo as an investment or for personal use.

Without a doubt, the first months of the year have been interesting for Panama. Though the country is small, in a couple of years it may be more likely to spot a celebrity here than on the streets of Hollywood.

Water sports have become the main attractions of thousands of foreign and domestic who make tourism in Panama. Tourism has grown over the past 10 years due to the large number of beaches and hotels that offer sports activities anywhere in the republic.

Fishing: a form of tourism

Sport fishing is one of the tourist attractions with the greatest number of fans. As for tourism, the sport is practiced in the Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea, on Gatun Lake and Piñas Bay, which have a 170 world record of this sport which is part of tourism in Panama.

The Pearl Islands formed by more than 40 uninhabited islands, is one of the places to make tourism in Panama through fishing, since there is not bad season, but great variety of fish. In the summer tourism is suitable for fishing because the seas flood of snapper, sole, and amberjack. Tourism is practiced in outer island where there are fish samples like big jack, tuna, wahoo and sailfish. Tourism in this sector proves to be a rewarding experience.

Rafting: pure adrenaline tourism

One of the rivers for tourism through rafting is Chiriqui Viejo, located in the province of Chiriqui. The fans make tourism rafting throughout the year, the rapids and spectacular waterfalls, conducting pure adrenaline tourism.

Golf: a good choice for tourists in Panama

The Coronado Golf Club located on the Pacific coast, just 83 miles from Panama City at the Hotel Coronado Club Suites Resort, has an 18-hole golf course, with 72 par yards for professionals, knights, seniors and ladies yards which is a different way of doing tourism. “Fairways” and the grass are surrounded by a wide variety of tropical trees that will appreciate when making tourism. This center is viewed as one of the best in Latin America.

Other tourism activities

For foreigners who decide to make tourism in Panama may be through diving. Panama offers the areas of Bocas del Toro, Coiba Island, Isla Grande and the Panama Canal. The kayaking and tubing, for the rivers of Chagres and Baru Volcano National Parks, is another interesting option to tap tourism in our territory.

From its pristine white sand beaches and Hispanic colonial ruins, to its untouched primary rainforest and year-round tropical maritime climate; Panama City, Panama offers an ideal primary residential destination. Within an hour’s drive from Panama’s modern capital city, local residents can explore and enjoy the nation’s hidden paradise.

Whether living in Panama year-round or purchasing a vacation home, the ambiance and lifestyle this region offers is incessant. From its endless islands and inlets to its world-renowned tourist excursions including Parque Internacional La Amistad, Archipiélago De Bocas Del Toro, Boquete, Parque Nacional Volcán Barú and Parque Nacional Coiba, residents can benefit from the region’s healthy economy, cultural offerings and nature destinations.

The country’s most famous attraction is, of course, the Panama Canal. The canal has established Panama as not only the commerce center between the Americas, but also as an international business hub.

And since foreigners can own real estate under the same laws as a Panamanian citizen, the buying process is simple. If you are thinking of retirement, having a vacation residence, or investing in the real estate don’t hesitate to discover this hidden paradise. Currently, new properties have a 20 year exoneration period, where you don’t have to pay real estate property tax. This was established by the Panamanian government as an incentive for national and foreign investments.

Panama City is a thriving modern metropolis, making it an ideal location to purchase an investment condominium or retirement home. If you are considering real estate investment or retirement abroad, Panama presents an ideal opportunity.

One of the most important questions that need answering when you are considering a holiday or visit to any place is the accommodation available. It is important that you choose a hotel or rental that suits your needs and budget. If you are planning a vacation or business visit to Panama you will be thrilled to find a range of Panama hotels that cater to the needs and requirements of most visitors.

Ideally it is a good idea to book your hotel in advance to ensure that you don’t have to bother looking for a room when you get here. This is especially true if you are coming during the peak tourist season, that starts in September and goes on to April. Also often advance bookings help fetch a cheaper price for the rooms.

Hotels Around the Country

There are plenty of sites that help you book your Panama hotels or you could speak to a travel agent for suggestions. Once you arrive at Panama City, the capital of the country you will find hotels that fit every budget. Depending on the purpose of your visit you can select the location of the hotel. For instance, if you are in Panama on business you may prefer accommodation that is close to the business district. On the other hand you could choose a hotel according to the services it offers such as a casino or for its location close to the lakes or the Panama Canal. If you want to get away from the city for a few days then book yourself into an El Valle hotel. Most hotels here are family owned and run with warmth and concern.

For the eco tourists, consider The Canopy Tower or the Los Quetzales lodges that have been developed for avid bird watchers. Bocas del Toro is an another favorite for people who wish to discover the natural beauty of this area. You can choose a hotel that has historical legacy and virtually a tourist attraction in itself or choose a hotel on one of the many islands here.

Do remember that the interiors of the country such as the far eastern part may not offer the kind of services that you would except in the city. However the rustic beauty of the terrain and its flora and fauna more than make up for it. It is important that you have a clear understanding of the kind of hotel you are checking into so that you aren’t caught unawares later.

Panama hotels offer exquisite cuisine. The sea food here should not be missed and is something that you are sure to list highly in your experience of the country. The diversity in culture and the foreign influence can be seen in the food here. Also since the country receives a lot of American and European tourists the cuisine is usually planned and prepared to meet the taste.

You could even consider a vacation package and check into a hotel that offers you all the sun, sand and activities that you are interested in. Do consider some of the resorts here including those in Decameron and Playa Blanca. If it is the country’s marine life that interests you, then choose a hotel on the Pearl Islands. For a truly unique Panama experience check in to a hotel at Boquete, located in the Chiriqui province. Some of the tourist attractions here include the Volcan Baru and river rafting.

Panama, which is already very popular as an eco and adventure tourism destination, is now gaining reputation as one of the best places to settle down in after retirement. According to Modern Maturity Magazine, published by AARP (American Association of Retired People), Boquete, a Panamanian town, has been ranked fourth among its list of the world’s fifteen best retirement destinations for Americans.

Panama’s attractiveness as a retirement location is not hard to define. Most people find it easy to settle down here because of the country’s easygoing lifestyle, high quality living, incentives given to retirees, along with modern facilities and services.

Apart from all that, Panama also scores because the country is so incredibly lovely. Because the Isthmus is located at the juncture between northern and southern America, the diverse plant and animal life found here is unique. The residential locations are equally diverse, ranging over mountain, city, beachfront and even island settings, so that people can find a place according to their taste and choice. Plus, although a foreigner, you have the same protections and rights to purchase and own property as a Panamanian.

Also, because of various factors, such as the American military pulling out of the area, the real estate prices in Panama have not changed much since the 1990s, except for some places like the Bocas del Toro archipelago islands and Boquete, which have become hot destinations.

As for safety, which is one of the most important considerations of retirees, Panama has been rated the highest for the safety of tourists by the reputable Pinkerton Intelligence Agency. Plus, Panama is a stable democracy and has a vibrant economy.

Regarding standards of health care, Panama is ranked amongst the topmost in Latin American countries. Many Panamanian physicians have had their training in the U.S. and Europe and are bilingual. Private medical facilities, many of which are associated with major hospitals in the U.S., are also available and are considered amongst the topmost in Central America. Additionally, potable water is available in most parts of the country, while it can be drunk right from the tap in the cities.

One of the main concerns retirees have is how to make the most of their retirement money. Panama’s currency has always been the U.S. dollar. Panama also boasts having the branches of most of the major international banks. Plus, the cost of living is affordable and a good deal less than in the U.S. and Europe. Also, retirees get generous discounts like 50 percent on cultural events and movies, 30 percent on transportation, 25 percent on airline tickets, 25 percent on utility bills, 20 percent on doctor’s bills, 15 percent on loans in your name, 10 percent on medicines, and 1 percent on mortgages in your name.

Staying in touch with family, friends and the world is easy. Cellular telephone networks, high-speed Internet connection, and ADSL in-home telephone facilities are readily available, along with cable TV. As for accessibility, the Tocumen International Airport is serviced by most major airlines like Delta and American. In addition, COPA, Panama’s international airline, has services to 29 cities in nineteen countries, and also has direct flights from Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Newark.

And to top it all, getting a retiree visa is an inexpensive and simple process. The only things you require are a “clean” report by the police of the place you resided in before moving to Panama, a health certificate from a Panamanian physician, along with proof of $500 per month of personal income, plus $100 if you have any dependents.

As is evident by all the above mentioned benefits, it is easy to understand why Panama is so popular as a retiree destination.

Panama has long been the crossroads of the new world and because of the country’s main interest, the Panama Canal, other sectors of the economy have been largely overlooked. With such intense focus on international trade and the canal, many of Panama’s coastal regions and natural wonders have been bypassed, opening doors for tremendous new opportunities and setting stage for large-scale tourism growth. Using its northern neighbor Costa Rica as an example, the potential for tourism in Panama is staggering.

Of its stunning islands, virgin rainforests, and pristine beaches, perhaps the most amazing feature of Panama is the secrecy that it has maintained. “I’ve seen so many hidden gems in Panama that just don’t exist in real life,” one recent visitor said. “Secluded beaches, private underwater snorkeling kingdoms, breezy island cabanas, these are things from the pages of National Geographic, and I certainly never thought I’d get to see them in my lifetime.” Most visitors to Panama feel the same way: like they are in on a traveling secret, the rest of the world is yet to discover.

Newcomers to Panama are delighted to find friendly locals, a low cost of living, high safety standards, and the use of the US Dollar. The country also holds a vast amount of history, represented most noticeably in its architecture, indigenous people, and strong sense of identity. There are several airport hubs in the USA which fly directly into Panama City and with the increase of tourism, more are expected to arise.

Provinces like Bocas del Toro (an island archipelago on Panama’s Caribbean coast) are attracting more and more travelers from across the globe. Café’s, restaurants and bars, filled with the sounds of different languages and the traits different countries. Bocas del Toro offers some of the country’s best water activities–such as snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing–along with a rustic island lifestyle that is hard not to fall in love with.

One of the most up-and-coming spots in Bocas del Toro is Tranquilo Bay: a rainforest-immersed eco-resort which overlooks the Caribbean Sea. Known for their adventure tours, quaint bungalows, and first-rate service, Tranquilo Bay offers a little piece of paradise and if you make it out there, chances are, you wont want to leave.

Panama Land Panama is a country rich in natural resources, history and culture. The Panama islands, rainforests and mountains have fascinated tourists from across the world. There is much to explore in the country and take home memories that are beautiful as well as precious. It is not surprising that most visitors consider settling down here. The people are friendly and the social culture is a melting pot, ever welcoming. Your clearest images of Panama may be of those that you have seen on the series of the popular American reality show, ‘Survivor’. And thus it wouldn’t be surprising that the Panama islands are what interest you the most.

If you look at the map of Panama you will find that it is a virtual land bridge between North America and South America. The North Pacific Ocean lies on the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east of the country. Most of the Panama islands were formed due to volcanic activity. There are many islands here and while some are inhabited there are many that are still untouched by the human population or civilization. Some of the top Panama islands that you shouldn’t miss out on include the following:

The San Blas Islands: Located to the north east of the mainland; these are amongst the most popular islands in the country. They should be on top of your list of places to visit in Panama. There are over 200 islands here, only half of which are named. About 30 of the San Blas islands are made of corals and a treasure in themselves. You can take short a short flight off the mainland to arrive here. Travel from one part of the island to the other may be by boats or by short flights. The San Blas islands are also home to the Kunas, an indigenous tribe. For a holiday that promises spectacular natural beauty away from the busy cities, San Blas is the place for you. You can enjoy diving, snorkeling, kayaking and fishing in this area.

Colon Island: Located in the Bocas del Toro region, the island is the largest amongst the archipelago of islands. It is one of the country’s biggest tourist attractions and offers its visitors the beauty of an island and the high life of the mainland. You can enjoy some of the country’s finest restaurants, discotheques and hotels. The island also has a strong boating community. While you are here, don’t forget to visit the other islands, which are just a water taxi ride away.

Pearl Islands: The Pearl islands are located about 50 miles from Panama City, the capital of the country. Most of these islands are uninhabited but are accessible by boat. You could plan to stay at the Contadora Island, amongst the largest of the Pearl Islands. It has some great hotels, fine restaurants and offers duty free shopping. It has 13 beautiful beaches for you to enjoy and relax on. Apart from the water sports that you can enjoy, birdwatching in this area is quite famous, especially on the Pacheca Island.

Boca Brava Island: The Island is located in the Gulf of Chirqui. The national marine park, Parque Nacional Marino Golfo de Chiriqui, is on it. This a wonderful place to enjoy a quiet holiday. And it is especially great if you enjoy diving, snorkeling and other non-motorized water sports. With Boca Brava Island as your base you can also explore some uninhabited islands such as the Saino and Las Ventanas.

The islands of Panama, in both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea offer you a terrific experience. However for diving, scuba diving and deep sea fishing the Pacific waters are amongst the best the world has to offer.

Panama is blessed with some of the most immaculate beaches, diverse jungles, and clear waters in all of Central America, and because the country is small (about the size of South Carolina) all of its bounty is easily accessible from its capital: Panama City. Some of Panama’s tour operators are already venturing into the country’s mysterious and untamed rainforest in the South–the Darien. With such biodiversity and rich cultural heritage, Panama is making a name for itself as the ultimate eco-tourism hub.

The country’s Caribbean coast is known for spectacular snorkeling and scuba diving, perhaps best exhibited in the northern archipelago of Bocas del Toro. Bocas first became a spot on the radar for military purposes and now boasts some of the best outdoor activities–such as sport fishing and island hopping–that the country has to offer.

Also on the Caribbean coast sits the San Blas archipelago: a stunning group of over 360 islands owned by the Kuna Indians. This region, or comarca as its referred to, retains strict laws for development and tourism, therefore, keeping its old-world charm and seemingly timeless virgin appeal. Trips to San Blas are a cultural experience of a lifetime, living with, eating alongside, and becoming friends with a tribe who has fought off nearly 500 years of colonial confrontation.

The Chiriqi province, and most notably its leader in tourism Boquete, have attracted a strong following as well–appealing to eco-tourists, nature lovers, and adventurers who are always in search of something a little different. Boquete boasts perhaps the fastest rise in real estate and is home to numerous developments and tour companies looking to cater to your every need.

Panama City is a living history book, every corner you turn offering a peak into the past, the way past, and sometimes even the future. The Panama Canal is easily the most recognizable of these attractions, and with its beautiful museum, observatory area, and information booths, it seems like its not letting up anytime soon. Casco Viejo, which used to be the city’s center still thrives today as this unique historic look into an earlier period.

Walk down the cobblestone streets, or eat lunch on a breezy afternoon in one of its open plazas, surrounded by rich Spanish architecture and feel what can only be described as a blast from the past. Panama City’s Amador Causeway, again originally of military purpose, now plays host to a bunch of trendy nightlife spots, zesty restaurants, and boutique shops for browsing. Panama also boasts, that its one of the few world capitals with a rainforest in its city limits.

From Panama City you can take an easy boat trip out to the Pearl Islands, known for their lush tropical rainforest and perfect beaches. Because domestic flights in Panama are so reasonable and safe, it seems that almost any attraction in this country is an option. Perhaps have coffee on the Caribbean coast then swing on over to the Pacific for some waffles. Where else can you say you’ve done that before?

Until recently, Panama has been a secret among world travelers. A secret no one really wanted to let out. But now that it has gotten out of the bag, more and more people are experiencing what life is like…in a country known once for its canal, and now for a whole lot more.

Prospective expatriates having major medical concerns and looking at Panama as a possible retirement destination need to consider settling somewhere near either Panama City or David. These two cities are probably best prepared for anyone that requires being close to a major hospital. In addition to the governmental sponsored hospitals (like Hospital Santo Tomas, the biggest Ministry of Health Hospital in the country), there are numerous state-of-the-art private hospitals. These private hospitals are the most frequently used among expatriates.

Within one to two hours of Panama City, numerous retirement destinations can be found that provide easy access to Panama City’s doctors and hospitals. Some of these towns and cities also have their own local hospitals. Two favorite expatriate communities, La Chorrera and Las Tablas are among those that have their own hospitals. If more services are needed than can be provided there, the larger and better equipped hospitals in Panama City are only a short distance away.

David, the third largest city (only Panama City and Colon are larger) is the closest major population center to the retirement communities of Boquete and Bocas del Toro in the western section of Panama.

Panama City. As the capital of Panama and the most populous city in Panama, it is not difficult to find exceptional hospitals and doctors. There are both government run and private hospitals in the area, but the majority of the expatriates use the private ones. There are at least a dozen hospitals in the Panama City area, but I am listing here only a few of the first class private hospitals most frequented by the expatriate population.

Hospital Punta Pacifica. Johns Hopkins Medicine International (JHI) has been affiliated with this hospital since 2001 and in 2009 signed an agreement to assume complete managerial oversight for the next seven years. Hospital Nacional. Began some 35 years ago as a women’s hospital, this 80 bed facility accepts some international health care plans Hospital Santa Fe. The hospital, nearest to the Panama Canal advertises itself as one of the most modern and best equipped hospitals in Panama. Most doctors and nurses are fluent in English and it offers a medical plan designed specifically for ages 60 and above. Centro Medico Paitilla. As one of the oldest private hospitals and a favorite of the Panamanian wealthy, most doctors speak English. They are particularly noted for their oncology department. Clinica Hospital San Fernando. For those looking for U.S. affiliations, this hospital located downtown on Via Espana street, is ideal. It is affiliated with Miami Children’s Hospital, Miami Baptist Health Center, and Tulane University.
David (officially San Jose de David). David is the capital city of the southwestern province of Chiriqui. It is a port city and close to the border of Costa Rica. It has four major hospitals, two of which are frequented in large numbers by the American expatriates.

The Social Security Hospital. This is a government hospital used primarily by Panamanians who are under Panama’s social security system. It is notable among expats for having anti-venom serum, including serum to combat the deadly Fer de Lance snake. The Chiriqui Hospital. This is the private hospital most frequently used by Americans. They have a discount medical “insurance” program widely used by expats. Hospital Mae Lewis. This is another private hospital also used by many expats Child & Maternal Health Hospital – This hospital was given as a gift to Panama from the taiwan government.
Expatriates choosing Panama as their destination do not have to give up first class medical service. It is readily available and considerably cheaper than in the United States. You only have to decide which hospitals, doctors, and medical services you require and take the steps to use them.
